It really is too bad that they’re sort of not a band anymore.
That’s the thought that strikes me when I listen to this record, and we hope it strikes you too. If it does, make some sort of comment about it. Then, maybe we could convince Vanimal to reassemble for more shows, because that would be rad.
Following a string of terrific shows in 2011, Vanimal has since joined the ranks of acts like O Bruxo as a “we don’t really play shows anymore, only for special occasions” band. This is a bad thing for Portland music, and a bad thing for you, because when Vanimal was going they were really great. Built upon the excellent rhythm section of Tim John O’Brien (bass) and Andrew Meininger (drums, now with WAMPIRE), Vanimal also featured strong synth work from Brent Braun (A Gentlemen’s Picnic) and Nick Ramsdell (whose vocal delivery is also a hallmark of the band’s sound). Vanimal’s compositions were made complete by Jakub Jerzy’s circuit-bent noisemakers, fundamental both to the band’s music and to this live record, where they provide interesting interstitials during song breaks. All combined to create dance music that could break even the hippest hipster from his (or her) ironic detachment.
As we all await the possibility of more Vanimal performances, we’re glad to be able to offer you their live album as a pay-what-you-want download. Vanimal – Live from the Banana Stand is a solid record of a great live band at the top of their game. We hope you love it.
Vanimal – Live from the Banana Stand was recorded before a live audience on October 30th, 2010 at the Banana Stand in Portland, Oregon. The album was mixed and mastered by Abe Ray at Loft Studios in Portland. Brian David Smith handled design and layout for album art, which includes original photography from various ‘Standers and the original show poster, also by Brian. The Banana Stand would like to thank Vanimal (Tim John, Andrew, Nick, Brent and Jakub), all who participated in this album’s creation and anyone that has helped us out along the way.
