August 29th, 2008 was a great show, surely one of the best of the ‘Stand’s early run. Jippedo – Live from the Banana Stand is the first of what will be two live releases from that night. We’re fond of it us not only because of how interesting it is musically, but because it marked the beginning of our relationship with some of our favorite musicians in Portland.
Jippedo (Andy Manla, Scott Blais and David Fimbres) played as part of a three band bill also featuring Modernstate (Sam Shauer, who plays today as Sam Humans, accompanied by Fimbres then and now) and Tranquilazer (a defunct ‘Stand-fave composed of Deer or the Doe minus Cassie Neth and Clint Cunningham, with Emily Strange on bass and and Brain Swaine on keys and main vocals).
Manla, also known as “Distant,” mixed, mastered and provided additional engineering (via a handheld stereo recorder) for Jippedo – Live from the Banana Stand. He did great work, both as performer and producer. We love how the album sounds. Manla’s vision for Jippedo was strange, wonderful, and a little haunting. His was one of those bands that exist outside a genre. It’s metal hillbilly? Spastic opera grunge? Carnival math rock? Whatever you call it, it’s good.
But, like so many good things, Jippedo was short lived, though all members continue to do great work in the Portland scene. Manla has moved on to Strangeletter, a post-industrial project founded by Steve Bayless. Blais and Fimbres went on to form the excellent (but also unfortunately short lived) O Bruxo with the above mentioned Sam Shauer and Jesse Munro Johnson (Gulls). As mentioned, Fimbres continues to play with Sam Shauer in Sam Humans (as at the August 29th show). We were near booking O Bruxo before they ceased playing, and hope to work with Sam Humans and Strangeletter in 2011.
None of the bands from the ‘Stand’s August 29th show exist in that form today. However: the live sound of each has been preserved forever. Jippedo – Live from the Banana Stand, available today for the first time in it’s entirety. Modernstate – Live from the Banana Stand, coming soon. Tranquilazer – Live from the Banana Stand, available on our Friends of the ‘Stand page. They’re all rad, they’re all gone, but at least you can still have a listen whenever you want.

Jippedo – Live from the Banana Stand was recorded in front of a live audience on August 29th, 2008 at the Banana Stand in Portland, Oregon. The album was mixed and mastered by Andy “Distant” Manla, who also provided additional engineering support at the show. Tony Ong handled design and layout for album art, which features photography by Jott Robertson and the August 29th show poster, which was designed by Aaron Robert Miller. The Banana Stand would like to thank Jippedo and all who participated in this album’s creation and anyone that has helped us out along the way.
