It’s always amazed me how Máscaras has the ability to bounce from heavier crushing moments to more floating, vibrant ones, that make you feel like you’re surfing on a giant wave in the sun. The trio has the ability to tell epic stories with their instruments that seem wholly different from song to song. Finally seeing this diverse array of sounds funneled down into just three very distinct musical personalities in a great live setting was amazing to say the least.
Carlos and Papi previously performed with other musical projects at the Banana Stand (Carlos played at our first show in 2007!), but the trio of Máscaras has a special musical dynamic that produces some uniquely incredible moments in any live performance. In person, it’s very clear that each member adds a very distinguishable narrative to the overarching tale of each song.
In addition to his elaborate melodies and shredding solos, Carlos created chaotic moments with distorted effects and erratic picking that seemed to melt seamlessly back into the hook of each song. Theo contributed everything from complex basslines that walked up the entire fretboard, to pounding riffs that anchored heavier songs. And Papi’s drumming, while always intricate and even airy for the more uplifiting moments, maintained this snap that nailed an infectious groove into each new performance.
We feel very fortunate to have captured so much relentlessly amazing performance from Máscaras. And If This recording was any indication, the trio is at its prime with a full tank of creative power to blaze full-speed ahead. Catch them live ASAP!
