Easy one of our favorite bands of all time with only two albums out, Unknown Mortal Orchestra are something of Portland legend around these parts. Bass player Jake Portrait has worked with The Dandy Warhols and variety of other bands as a producer, and plays in the incredibly hip Blouse. Lead-singer Ruban Nielson's first group, Mint Chicks, was the envy of every band in town while still together.
It's not out of the question to call us super-fans. So be it.
Following our interviews with The Thermals and Portugal. The Man, we reached out to the group, and Nielson was kind enough to answer some questions that we hoped to get placed on a site larger than ours. But, as that fell through, we were excited to repurpose the content here, figuring any fans of Banana Stand would love to get some greater insight into one of the city's most popular, yet one of the more elusive bands.

Tango Alpha Tango produces a sound as American as the flag on frontman Nathan Trueb's amp. Composed of Trueb's extended family -- Tango Alpha Tango includes wife Mirabai on bass and brother Aaron on keyboards and harmonica, in addition to the excellent Walker Beckman on drums (at the time of this recording) -- the band flawlessly executes blues-inspired rock appropriate for stages anywhere in the country and fans of any age. But it was the incredible live musicianship witnessed during a performance at White Eagle had us all looking forward to Tango's secret performance at Banana Stand in September 2011.

The secret show was packed to the point that people couldn't get in to see the band. And it being a June night, the party started getting sweaty down in the basement filled with a dancing crowd.

With their Live from the Banana Stand performance, Fanno Creek provides the best evidence yet for their status as one of the best new bands in Portland.
It's interesting, in a way, that the album provides me such a joyous listening experience. Its subject matter seems to often fall on the bluesier side of the folk/rock/country spectrum that Fanno Creek inhabits, with songs about, amongst other topics, yearning, solitude, and "jobs you fucking hate." It's a credit to the band's songwriting that that tracks often feel so positive. With jangling strings, rich vocal harmonies, and powerful drumming driving each song, the band's combination of soulful songwriting and dynamic delivery creates an engaging tension.
