Raf Spielman (Eggy Records, The Woolen Men) is one of our favorite people in Portland music. We were thrilled when he agreed to make his more experimental project, The Polyps, a part of our May 2011 event.
Though Spielman occasionally tours solo under the Polyps banner (notably recording a WFMU session), he was accompanied by Chris Cantino (guitar, of Archers) and Lawton Browning (drums, also of The Woolen Men) for this live recording. The trio delivered a brief but excellent set of swirling, guitar-driven post-rock that, after mixing by Alex Arrowsmith, provides some of my very favorite listening moments of the 2011 season. Download it, it’s great. If you’re anything like me it will stimulate the guitar center of your brain in an almost perfect way.
The Polyps – Live from the Banana Stand was recorded before a live audience on May 28th, 2011 at the Banana Stand in Portland, Oregon. The album was mixed and mastered by Alex Arrowsmith. Brian David Smith handled design and layout for album art, which includes original photography from various ’Standers and the original show poster, also by Brian. The Banana Stand would like to thank The Polyps (Raf, Chris and Lawton), all who participated in this album’s creation and anyone that has helped us out along the way.
