I'll admit, my affection for The Woolen Men is subjective. Upbeat, melodic pop-punk with a strong sense of irony but little sense of angst, the band hits all the music receptors I overdeveloped in my youth. But I've also seen enough music in Portland to know how special the band is.Read more »

It only took us about 30 seconds to make a decision about Modern Kin. The band's self-titled debut impressed us immediately with its distinctive, confident performances and rich production. Heavier and weirder than local Americana or folk, and with more folk and gospel influences than Portland's indie-rock offerings, Modern Kin has a sound purely its own.
