GRAMMIES – Live from the Banana Stand is now available from all finer digital retailers. We hope you love it!
GRAMMIES are one of those Portland bands too rare for this world. A powerful duo, saxophonist Noah Bernstein and drummer Dan Sutherland create layers upon layers of intertwining and overlapping complex rhythms and sounds that most bands would need eight or more players to produce. Seeing them live is like watching lightning strike the same spot over and over again. Despite their incredible music abilities, the pair are humble, kind, and not without a pinch of humor as evident in their two album titles AWARD WINNING and GREAT SOUNDING, along with their Beyoncé-like logo.
Of course, something that gold can never stay. GRAMMIES have been on something on an extended hiatus with Bernstein touring with the now LA-based Shy Girls and trying his hand at opening a bagel business in Portland while Sutherland is deep in rotations for his physician assistant degree. Such is the life of bands, but we hope they’ll play again together someday in the near future. Though Portland is known for its indie-rock, folk, metal, and emerging hip-hop scene, GRAMMIES was one of the most remarkable groups in the city, along with 1939 Ensemble and Like A Villain, proving experimental music – if that’s what you want to call it – is often more moving than any verse-chorus-verse-chorus tracks can be.
Banana Stand was only able to capture a small amount of what made GRAMMIES so wonderful. Though it may be a long time before you’re ever able to see the band live again, don’t miss out on a glimpse of their amazing talent.
